# API reference

> Start with the Visito API and find endpoints for messaging, AI, customer operations, and events.

Connect your backend to Visito to work with customer conversations, agent knowledge, sales, and operations. This reference covers each endpoint's parameters, permissions, and responses. For complete workflows and examples, start with the [Developer Guide](https://docs.visitoai.com/api-docs/introduction.md).

## Explore by area

> **[Messaging](https://docs.visitoai.com/api-reference/messaging/overview)**
>
> Channels, conversations, WhatsApp templates, and delivery status.

> **[AI and automation](https://docs.visitoai.com/api-reference/ai/overview)**
>
> Knowledge, agent settings, Actions, and custom tools.

> **[Customer operations](https://docs.visitoai.com/api-reference/operations/overview)**
>
> Tickets, sales CRM, follow-ups, commerce, and reservations.

> **[Business and events](https://docs.visitoai.com/api-reference/platform/overview)**
>
> Businesses, locations, reporting, webhooks, and documentation search.

## Make your first request

**1. Create an API key**

In the Visito dashboard, open **Build → API Keys** and create a key with `channels:read`. Store it on your server. See [authentication and permissions](https://docs.visitoai.com/api-docs/authentication.md).

**2. List your channels**

Use the production base URL and send your key as a Bearer token.

```bash theme={null}
curl https://platform-api.visitoai.com/m2m/v1/channels \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $VISITO_M2M_API_KEY" \
  -H "Accept: application/json"
```

**3. Choose your next endpoint**

Use a channel's stored `id`, then check the permissions, parameters, and responses on the endpoint page. Expand a sidebar category to browse its endpoints.

## Before you integrate

Read [Using the API](https://docs.visitoai.com/api-reference/conventions.md) for authentication, pagination, errors, retries, and asynchronous delivery. The API is server-to-server: keep keys out of browser and mobile client code.

> [!TIP]
>
> Use the [OpenAPI definition](https://docs.visitoai.com/openapi.json) to generate clients or work with a coding assistant. Endpoint pages are generated from the same definition.
